FMAD Club Events — Feb. 2026

Our club had an incredible month last month! We’re growing! Over 60 people were in attendance at our January FMAD Club Meeting. Four new precinct chairs were recruited. And together we generated a number of fresh ideas for fostering more community within our club that we will be implementing this month and in the months ahead.

In case you missed it…

We co-hosted an amazing Immigration Crackdown Forum event in collaboration with the Lantana Area Democrats & the Lewisville Democrats. Around 200 people attended this timely event. You can watch the recording here. Immigration Crackdown Forum https://youtu.be/x2AHBzXz9Bo?si=5iktXisk6fWxwNmE

Here are some of the highlights from LAD Chair Gina Daly: “Our three speakers — Lilyan Prado-Carillo (motivational speaker), Angee Andrade (activist), and Maria Macias (immigration attorney) — spoke movingly about their own immigration journeys before sharing the heartbreaking realities faced daily by families across North Texas. They described helping 30 to 70 families every day in the DFW area. Many of these families report that when they appear for required check-ins, one or more family members are arrested and placed in detention under current policies. Some are taken from their cars, others from their homes. Most often, the person detained is the primary breadwinner, leaving families without income, legal guidance, or the ability to make urgent financial decisions. The speakers also shared disturbing accounts from detention centers:

• freezing temperatures with no heat
• lights left on 24 hours a day
• spoiled or worm-infested food
• unsanitary conditions

Families are frequently misled and treated in deliberately inhumane ways. The speakers emphasized the importance of preparation for these families — including setting up jail funds, understanding financial responsibilities, and securing legal representation in advance.

Angee Andrade works with La Colectiva NTX, a grassroots community organization providing mutual aid and direct support for families separated by ICE at the Dallas field office. She stressed that their greatest need is donations to help provide coats for detainees, rent assistance, and other essential supplies. Please consider donating — especially as a monthly supporter — at: Donate to La Colectivahttps://givebutter.com/dtxbridge

Maria Macias explained our legal rights when encountering ICE and reminded us that everyone is vulnerable under current enforcement practices. She noted that in efforts to meet detention quotas, even U.S. citizens have been detained.

She made clear that ICE cannot enter your home or private areas of your business without a JUDICIAL WARRANT signed by a judge. The documents they often present may look official but are not the same. (Images attached)

Maria also suggested that we can be trained as legal observers. “Legal observers are trained, neutral, third-party volunteers—often organized by the National Lawyers Guild or ACLU of Texas—who document interactions between police and demonstrators to protect First Amendment rights. They wear high-visibility vests to record police misconduct, which serves as evidence in legal challenges.”  Usually these online trainings are offered from the ACLU and the National Lawyers Guild. We also handed out whistle kits with instructions, pins and know your rights cards.”

And at our January FMAD Club meeting, after hearing from our wonderful Mayor of Flower Mound — Cheryl Moore — about the importance of getting involved in your town’s local non-partisan clubs & town government through the citizens academies & boards & commissions, we brainstormed together as a club and came up with some more ways to bring us together and foster more community.

Ideas generated include:
1) Ride Share — Small group dedicated to giving rides to club events for those in need.

2) Game Night — Small group willing to host or take turns hosting an evening of game play & fun once a month
3) Dinners With Dems — Small group of members willing to host or take turns hosting dinners or potlucks at their homes.
4) Care Crew — Small group of members willing to organize care packages, meal-trains, well-checks for our members as needs arise.
5) Picnics — We have lots of parks in our area we could organize a gathering at, just to have fellowship & fun. Weather permitting, of course.
6) Book Club — Small group of members willing to host a book club. Can rotate.

7) Hobby Huddle — Small group of members crafting together.

8) Dems & Doggos — Dog Park Outings with Dems

9) Coffee & Bagels  — Idea for an inexpensive & casual get together

10) Walking Group — Flower Mound has ~58 trails it would be fun to walk together.

11) Self-Defense Training — One of our members is certified to host a training

12) Learn a New Skill/Sport — Get together & learn something new

A number of our members expressed their willingness to host or volunteer to help out with these. If you volunteered, we will be reaching out to you to coordinate. If anyone else would like to host or help, please reach out to us and, we promise we will reach back.

In the meantime, we’ve got a great calendar of events for the month of February, including a Democratic Primary Candidate Forum for you to attend and a Democratic Primary for you to Early Vote in. This our best chance yet to take back control of our state legislature & Congress, and keep the very worst from happening. We need each other to do this and more. We need community.  And we need YOU.

As one of the longest serving Democratic clubs in the county, we pride ourselves on offering a variety of events & activities, consistently, each and every month. We offer monthly club meetings, so you can come and socialize with your fellow Dems and be informed by speakers on a variety of relevant topics, hear from candidates running for office, and learn how you can get involved. We offer training opportunities. We offer volunteer opportunities. We offer community. We offer hope.

Early Voting Democratic Primary

When: Tues, Feb 17– Fri., Feb 20, 8am-5pm. Sat. Feb 21, 7am-7pm. Sun, Feb 22,11am-5pm. Mon, Feb 22-Fri Feb 27, 7am – 7pm

Where: Early Voting Locations within Denton County

What: Early Voting for the mid-term Democratic Primary begins 2/17 and goes through 2/27. Election Day is March 3rd, 7am-7pm, and the location is precinct-specific. Go to www.votedenton.gov to see your precinct number, check your voter registration, find out who your current representatives are, see your sample ballot, and confirm your precinct’s polling location for election day. It’s important to vote early versus waiting until election day. 1) With early voting you can vote at any early voting location within the county. 2) Election day voting is precinct specific. If you show up at the wrong polling location, you will be turned away. It is also important that Democrats vote in Democratic Primaries. It is NOT strategic for Dems to vote in a Republican primary. 1) It NEVER works. Like ever. 2) It skews the data. Primaries produce data. When Dems vote in Republican primaries instead of their own, it makes it look like there are more Republicans in your precinct, your area, your county than there actually are. Money for elections & money from state & national parties then follows that data. It tells the Republican party that you’re one of them, so you will get their literature, their texts, their door-knocks instead of information from the Democratic party about the Democratic candidates on your ballot. So vote in Democratic primaries. Identify yourself as a Democrat along with all the other Dems in your area. Let the data show you support the Democratic party and Democratic candidates. Help Democratic candidates get elected. The blue wave is you!

FMAD Club Events — November 2025

FMAD Club Events — November 2025

Hello Flower Mound Area Democrats Members!

The chill in our November air means that Fall has finally fallen for us here in Texas, making wonderful weather for soups, volunteering, voting, and for all our club has to offer this month. If you have not voted yet, we have a special election happening right now for the 17 proposed changes to the Texas Constitution and for LISD School Board. Early Voting started on October 20th and will continue through the 31st (Halloween). The best time to vote is to vote early, so don’t miss your last chance to early vote. Election Day is Nov. 4th. More details below, including links to research those propositions, info about the candidates, & DCDP recommendations. Join us this month for our First Fridays Happy Hour, November Club Meeting, Breakfast Club, & Adopt-a-Spot Clean up. All the details are included below. And enjoy this month’s calendar (attached).

As one of the longest serving Democratic clubs in the county, we pride ourselves on offering a variety of events & activities, consistently, each and every month. We offer monthly club meetings, so you can come and socialize with your fellow Dems and be informed each meeting as we bring in speakers to present on a variety of relevant topics, host candidates for office, and provide you with ways to get better connected & more involved. We offer training opportunities. We offer volunteer opportunities. We offer community. We offer hope.

What: This is a special election for School Board and for the Texas 2025 Proposed Constitutional Amendments. Go to www.votedenton.gov for more details on where to vote and to see your sample ballot.  We support incumbent Michelle Alkhatib for LISD Board of Trustees. Here is Michelle Alkhatib’s website: www.michelle4lisd.com  ***THIS IS A NON-PARTISAN RACE.*** We all helped Michelle Alkhatib get elected 2 years ago and she has been brilliant on School Board, appreciated and respected by her peers on the board, educators, PTA, parents, & students. She is a true supporter of our public schools against a state legislature that is not. A far-right group recruited her opponent to run against her simply because of her (Michelle’s) last name. Don’t let this kind of hate win here. Vote for Michelle Alkhatib. Vote for advocacy. Vote for experience.

Your vote counts, and that is especially true in low-voter-turn-out elections like these. This is where you live, and it matters who you pick to lead locally because it will absolutely affect you where you live.

Election Day Voting for Special Election:

FMAD Club Events — October 2025

Hello Flower Mound Area Democrats Members!

It’s October and we’ve got a busy month ahead. We have a special election coming up for the Texas Constitutional Amendments and for LISD School Board. Early Voting starts on October 20th and goes through the 31st. Our club will have a booth at Flower Mound’s first ever Fall Into Flower Mound Festival the 10th-11th. We’ll be hosting a Multi-Candidate Fundraiser at this month’s club meeting on the 15th. And don’t forget about the No Kings Rally planned for the 18th. Details about all this month’s events included below.

Come see what your local Democratic party is doing. Jump in and join us!

FMAD October Club Meeting & Multi-Candidate Fundraiser:

When: Wednesday, October 15th, 6:30 pm – 8:00 pm

Where: Creekwood Christian Church, Great Room/Common Area, 2660 Forest Vista Dr., Flower Mound, TX, 75028

What: Too many of us Dems for too long have hyper-focused on national politics & national candidates to the exclusion of all else. We’re accustomed to paying attention to national politics and opening our wallets for national candidates. We donate to presidential campaigns and anyone willing to run against Ted Cruz or John Cornyn. Meanwhile, our more local candidates are out here having to use their own money to buy expensive lit and expensive signs to try to get the word out about their campaigns and win their local races. And then we wonder why it’s hard to find good candidates to run for office. Here in our FMAD Club, we are trying to change that. That’s why we’re turning our October Club Meeting into an all-in-one fundraising event for some of our local candidates: Ernest Lineberger for CD26, Denise Wooten for TX HD63, Detrick DeBurr for TX HD65, Clare Harris for Flower Mound Town Council, Michelle Alkhatib for LISD Board of Trustees Place 6, Stephanie Draper for Denton County Commissioner Precinct 4, and Dale Frey for Denton County Commissioner Precinct 2. These are important local races (some of them non-partisan) that will affect you right where you live. So let’s open our wallets for them! Our goal is to raise a $1000 for each each candidate. Come enjoy pizza & cake & door prizes, and meet & hear directly from each of these great candidates. Each candidate will have a table you can visit, meet the candidate & pick up some lit and maybe a sign or two, and each will display a QR code you can use to donate to their individual campaigns. ***We are recommending that our members/attendees try, if they can, to donate $20 to each candidate, but our candidates will absolutely take whatever you can give.*** Local liberal-owned businesses will be providing some of our door prizes for our club meeting attendees. The event starts at 6:30 pm, with attendees being welcomed to eat & drink and meet the candidates at their tables & to donate to their campaigns. Starting at 7:00 pm, each candidate will have a chance to speak. Then at 7:45 we will draw and announce our door prize winners. Event to end at 8:00 pm. Members who cannot attend in person can still participate virtually by donating to these candidates’ campaigns online through their websites.

We have a great bench of local candidates who we really want to see get elected, so we wanted to host a fundraiser that will benefit each of them. Let us know you’re coming here: FMAD October Club Meeting & Multi-Candidate Fundraiser

***Disclaimer: Creekwood Christian Church does not financially support individual political candidates nor does it sponsor expressly political fundraising.

She is a true supporter of our public schools against a state legislature that is not. A far-right group recruited her opponent to run against her simply because of her (Michelle’s) last name. We will be accepting donations of bottled water at our July & August meetings, so be sure to bring a case or two to donate. We will also continue working through Timothy Snyder’s book “On Tyranny — 20 Lessons from the 20th Century.” Join us as we learn about & discuss Snyder’s 20 different strategies we can use to defend our democracy against an authoritarian government and preserve our freedoms. The book is available at most libraries, bookstores, and for purchase online. It’s a very short book (128 pages) that can be read or listened to by audiobook in under 2 hours. Folks who want to can feel free to read or listen to it beforehand, but it is NOT a prerequisite. We are taking it in chunks at a time. Come learn with us how to resist fascism effectively together. Feel free to sign up and let us know you’re coming through this Mobilize link: FMAD July Club Meeting

FMAD Club Events — May 2025

We won! And to quote a line from that 80s baseball sex movie Bull Durham, “I love winning, man! I [blanking] love winning! You know what I’m saying? It’s, like, better than losing?” Democrats in Denton County and several surrounding counties won key races in last weekend’s May Municipal Elections, including our very own Dr. Sheila Taylor, who not only graduated with her Doctorate in Education on Saturday, she WON re-election to our LISD School Board! She won, not just because (to quote the late great Tina Turner) she’s “Simply the best, Better than all the rest,” but because YOU voted, and because of how hard her campaign and our precinct chairs worked to get her re-elected. Dr. Sheila Taylor deserved to be re-elected. Together we ensured she was re-elected. Check out our May Calendar of Events and let’s come together this month to celebrate our wins and to continue the work together to resist MAGA locally as well as nationally, elect competent candidates, and protect & preserve our democracy for generations to come. When we come together and work together, there’s nothing we can’t do.

Join us for another Citizens Town Hall to share your concerns about Social Security, Medicare/Medicaid, Veteran’s Benefits, Medical Research, School Funding, Immigration, and so much more. The DCDP and Robson Ranch Democrats have invited Rep. Brandon Gill to hear what his constituents have to say, but he has declined. But Ernest Lineberger, who has already announced he will run again against Gill for 2026, will be there to listen to YOU. The event will be recorded and sent to Rep. Brandon Gill to make sure he hears what you have to say. You don’t have to live in Robson Ranch to attend or to speak at the event.
